Android continues it’s take over.

Recently the ratings group Nielsen released data that shows Android now owns 43% of the smartphone OS business with Apple IOS only garnering 28%. No wonder Apple is trying to sue it out of existence. In just 3 short years Google and Android have destroyed their market share, by truly inovating the way people use phones.

I believe that within the next few months, we will see Android continue to grow. Not only in the phone market but also in the tablet market as well.

Backup solution issues

I have been having a problem with a custom backup solution for a small business server.

I wrote a rule set for udev that recognizes a USB external hard drive. Udev then automatically creates a /dev/backup node for the device. I have the job scheduled with cron to run @ 11pm every day.

The script executes as it should, the drive is mounted on /media/backup, the files are then rsynced over to the drive. The script then umounts /media/backup and all seems well.

A few minutes later the /media/backup mount point fills up with a copy of the rsynced files, this in turn fills the root partition up and crashes Samba.

The server continues to work as expected except for the Samba crash. I have not been able to come to grips with what is happening, but as soon as I do I will pass the info on here.

I was on Google plus before it became public

Using KVM with Debian

Recently, I installed KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) to see how it compares to Virtual Box for virtualization. Here are the steps I took to get it going on my Dell E6500 running Debian Squeeze.

Step 1: First install the kvm and virt-manager packages. Debian uses the qemu-kvm. This is done as root.

code: apt-get install qemu-kvm virt-manager

Step 2: Add your normal user to the libvirt group. This is so your normal user will have permissions to access the libvirtd and kvm environment.

code: useradd <your user> libvirt

Step 3: Now log out and login again so your user will be a part of the libvirt group.

Thats it. As you can see this was a pretty easy setup for kvm and Debian.
